Argassi Sights | Zakynthos

While holidaying in Argassi take time out to visit the local sights of interest.

Church of the Virgin Mary

Church of the Virgin Mary | Argassi Zante Zakynthos

The most famous being the Church of the Virgin Mary of Skopiotissas that was built in 1624 on the peak of Mount Skopos. The church was built in the shape of a cross on the site of a temple of Artemeis and is surrounded by the ruins of a once thriving monastery. It is said that when the weather is clear, this church can be seen throughout Zakynthos.

Inside the church are beautiful wall paintings of saints and a splendid icon of the Virgin Skopiotissa. The Iconostasis (a screen decorated with icons within Orthodox churches) is unusual as it is built from stone and not wood like all the other churches in Zakynthos.

The Old Bridge

Next to the small harbour are the ruins of a small bridge dated from 1885 which is located in the sea about 15 ft from the shore. The bridge used to carry the main coast road before the erosion of the coastline.

The Kamara at Vrysakia

This magnificent bridge is 15m high and has a series of archways bearing the pipes which brought water to the main town. It was constructed during the period of British rule and legend has it that Kolokotronis, who lived on Zakynthos 15 years before the 1821 war of independence, was very fond of this place and used to ride his horse over the bridge.

Barrage

Although now a thriving busy nightclub located on the coastal road, it is said that the house was once the summer home of the first prime minister of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias.

Argassi also has the benefit of being close to Zakynthos town which can be reached by foot, local bus or the tourist train, here there are many interesting sights and museums.
